Why your car's A/C shouldn't just be regassed - and what to do instead

As the weather warms up on the Sunshine Coast, we start seeing lots of people booking in for “A/C regas” services. But here’s a little secret most drivers don’t know —

Your car’s air conditioning gas doesn’t get used up!

If your system is working properly, the refrigerant gas should last the life of the vehicle. So if your A/C isn’t blowing cold air, that usually means there’s a leak or mechanical fault that needs attention — not just a top-up.

Here’s How Your Car’s A/C System Works

Your A/C system is a closed loop made up of key components:

Compressor: Pressurises and circulates the refrigerant gas.

Condenser: Removes heat from the gas, turning it into a liquid.

Receiver-drier or accumulator: Filters out moisture and contaminants.

Expansion valve: Controls how much refrigerant enters the evaporator.

Evaporator: Cools the air that’s blown into your cabin.

When everything is sealed and functioning, the refrigerant simply cycles through this loop again and again — it doesn’t get used up.

Australian Regulations (ARCtick Licence Requirements)

Under Australian law, automotive air conditioning work must be carried out by ARCtick-licensed technicians (in line with the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Regulations 1995).

This helps protect the environment, as refrigerant gases can be harmful to the ozone layer and contribute to global warming if released into the air.

Our technicians are fully ARCtick licensed, which means we:

✅ Detect and repair leaks before refilling

✅ Use and store refrigerants safely

✅ Ensure compliance with environmental standards

Why We Don’t Just “Regas”

Simply regassing a leaking system is not only illegal — it’s wasting your money. The gas will leak out again, and the root cause remains unfixed.

Instead, we diagnose the issue properly, repair it, and then recharge the system to factory specifications. That way, your A/C stays cold — and compliant — for the long term.

Need your A/C checked?

If your air con isn’t performing like it used to, book in for a leak and performance test. We’ll find the cause and get it sorted properly.
